… which for example gives you hope for better times or success. People all over the world trust a variety of talismans, rituals or lucky charms.
Whether it’s a lucky penny, a sweater of success or an image of a saint – what a lucky charm is and what makes it a lucky charm is based on very personal experiences and personal attitudes. It can also be a small gift with the good wishes of a friend or a lucky ritual that is performed before important dates, for example. Or just a small souvenir from the last holydays.
Scarab. Already the ancient Egyptians had lucky charms
Already in ancient times people trusted symbols of luck. During excavations in Egypt, for example, masses of amulets in the form of the Holy Pill Duster or scarab, a dung beetle species from the Mediterranean region about three centimeters in size, were found. These so-called beetle stones are usually carved from soapstone or artistically made of alabaster, glass or even gold and stood for resurrection and life.
But what exactly is Maneki-neko?
Everybody knows it – the “Waving Cat”. It is a popular Japanese lucky charm in the shape of an upright sitting cat. With raised paw it waves good luck and keeps evil away.
By the way: Legends of cats that bring good luck have been known since the Edo period (1603-1867). According to the Japanese tradition, the Maneki-neko is the reincarnation of Kannon, the Japanese goddess of grace.
