“To go” is an old hat in Japan, because Bento boxes have a centuries-old tradition and have been known since the fifth century. Originally a meal for on the road (for example, in bamboo leaves as food for field work), “Bentō” is now more than just a lunchtime meal – it is part of Japanese food culture.
In the course of time, different types of bento developed, and in the 15th century, these were artistically arranged in a wooden box or in lacquered boxes and served on special occasions.
Today, Bento has its firm place in Japanese culture. On New Year’s Day, for example, the whole family can enjoy a multi-storey box, and at the famous Cherry Blossom Festival (Hanami) people bring bentos to a common picnic.
